Take Action for the Maugean Skate

Tasmania is facing an extinction emergency of a globally unique Gondwana relic – the Maugean Skate – that could be the world’s first extinction of a shark or ray species due to industrial aquaculture. 

Back in 2011, prior to salmon farming expanding in Macquarie Harbour, Environment Tasmania was the first and only group to raise the alarm that such a reckless expansion could result in negatively impacting the endangered Maugean Skate. 

Fast forward to today, and our worst fears have been confirmed by leading scientists. Salmon farming has caused oxygen levels in the harbour to plummet to dangerously low levels – suffocating the skate and its eggs. It’s estimated less than 1,000 skates remain.

The good news is the science is clear on how to fix the problem – remove salmon farming. But the time to act is NOW.
